A split divan is designed to make a large, supportive bed far easier to get through a narrow hallway, up a staircase or into a loft conversion. Knowing how to assemble split divan bases means you can enjoy that convenience without compromising on a smart, sturdy finish. In most cases, the job takes two people around 20 to 40 minutes, with no specialist experience required.

The key is to assemble the base on a clear, protected area close to where the bed will sit. Split divans are heavy, particularly in king and super king sizes, so it is much easier to position each half before the mattress is in place.

Before You Assemble a Split Divan

Start by checking the delivery against your order. A standard split divan normally arrives as two upholstered base sections, a set of feet or gliders, joining brackets or link bars, and any headboard fittings. If you have chosen drawers, check that they are facing the intended side of the room before joining the two sections. It sounds obvious, but reversing a drawer base after assembly is an avoidable bit of heavy lifting.

If you have ordered a headboard, it may arrive separately. Ottoman divans also have different fittings and should come with their own instructions for the lifting mechanism. Do not assume that every split base uses the same connector system. Some have metal linking plates, while others use bolts, slide connectors or a combination of fittings.

Have a second person available before you begin. You may only need a screwdriver or spanner, depending on the supplied fixings, but two people make lining up the bases safer and more accurate. Keep the packaging nearby until the bed is fully assembled and checked.

How to Assemble Split Divan Bases Step by Step

1. Prepare the bedroom space

Clear enough room to lay both base sections flat, with the upholstered tops facing upwards. Protect pale carpets or delicate flooring with the clean cardboard from the packaging. Avoid dragging the bases across a wooden floor, as this can mark both the floor and the fabric.

Decide where the head of the bed will be, then place each section in roughly its final position. The headboard fixing points should face the wall. On a drawer divan, ensure drawers have enough clearance to open once bedside tables and radiators are considered.

2. Fit the feet or gliders

Turn one base section carefully onto its side or upside down with help from another person. Locate the threaded holes on the underside and screw in the supplied feet by hand. Tighten until secure, but do not overtighten, especially if the fitting is plastic or has a delicate chrome finish.

Repeat with the second section. A typical split divan has four feet on each half, although the number can vary by size and design. If your base has castors, press or screw them in as directed. Make sure every foot sits evenly before turning the sections back upright.

This is also a good time to check the floor. A slightly uneven floor can make a bed feel as though it rocks, even when it has been assembled correctly. In most homes, repositioning the base slightly is enough. If not, a suitable furniture pad beneath a foot can help, provided it does not make the bed unstable.

3. Bring the two sections together

Place the two halves side by side, with the upholstered fabric and corners aligned. There should be no obvious gap along the centre join. For a standard split divan, the two sections create one level sleeping platform, so take a moment to check that both tops meet at the same height.

Do not force the sections together from an angle. If the bases will not meet cleanly, check whether a foot is unevenly fitted, a drawer is open, or packaging has been left beneath one section.

4. Secure the joining brackets

Most split divans include joining brackets or link bars near the head and foot end. These stop the bases separating as you sit on the edge of the bed, turn during the night or move the mattress.

With the bases correctly aligned, attach the brackets following the supplied fitting points. On a bolt-and-nut system, feed the bolt through both aligned holes, add the washer and tighten the nut. On slide connectors, line up the metal plates and lower or slide one section into the other until it locks. If your divan uses link bars, push them firmly into place so both halves are held together.

The connectors should feel firm, but there is no need to strain or use excessive force. If holes are not lining up, separate the bases slightly, realign them and try again. Tightening a bracket while the bases are out of line can pull the join crooked and leave a visible gap.

5. Attach the headboard, if included

Headboards are usually fitted after the base is joined. Locate the headboard bolts or fixing slots at the head end of the divan. Loosen the bolts enough to slide the headboard struts into position, then adjust the height before tightening them evenly.

For a polished look, the bottom of the headboard should sit just above the top of the divan base, rather than pressing down onto it. The ideal height depends on your mattress depth and the style of headboard. A tall upholstered design may be set higher to create a luxury focal point, while a lower design can suit a compact bedroom.

Ask your helper to hold the headboard straight while you tighten the fittings. Once secure, gently test it from both sides. It should not wobble or lean.

Fitting the Mattress and Checking Stability

Place the mattress on top only after the bases, feet and joining system are secure. A mattress can be awkward to handle, particularly a deep pocket-sprung or pillow-top model, so lift it with two people rather than bending it sharply or dragging it over the upholstery.

Centre the mattress so it sits evenly across the whole base. Then press down gently along the middle and around each corner. The divan should remain level, the join should stay closed and none of the feet should shift.

Walk around the bed and open every drawer if you have a storage divan. Check that the drawers glide out freely and do not catch on skirting boards, bedside furniture or a thick rug. Small adjustments to the bed position are much easier now than once the room is fully arranged.

Extra Care for Ottoman and Zip-and-Link Beds

A split ottoman divan needs a little more attention than a standard base. The lifting mechanism is under tension, so do not remove any retaining straps, safety ties or protective clips until the instructions tell you to do so. Where supplied, a mattress should be fitted before the ottoman is opened for the first time, as its weight helps the mechanism operate as intended.

For side-lift ottomans, make sure the opening side faces clear floor space rather than a wall or wardrobe. An end-lift model needs clearance at the foot of the bed. Never let children play with the lifting mechanism, and keep fingers clear of moving metal parts.

Zip-and-link beds are different again. Each divan base may be assembled in the usual way, but the mattresses join with a zip. Check the mattress labels so both are facing the correct direction, then zip from one end to the other without pulling the fabric too tightly. This creates a practical larger bed for couples or a flexible twin arrangement for guest rooms and accommodation settings.

Common Split Divan Assembly Problems

If there is a gap between the base sections, the usual cause is misaligned brackets or uneven feet. Loosen the connectors, square up the bases and refit them rather than trying to pull the sections together by force.

If the bed rocks, check that all feet are fully fitted and touching the floor. A wobbly headboard is usually cured by tightening the bolts evenly after the struts have been set to the same height. If a drawer will not open, first confirm that the drawer is on the intended side and that there is enough room around the bed.

Keep all spare fittings and instructions in a labelled envelope. They can be useful if you move home or need to dismantle the bed later. Although a split divan is built for easier access, it is still best moved in two separate pieces rather than as one joined unit.

A well-assembled split divan should feel every bit as solid as a one-piece base while making delivery, moving and bedroom access far less stressful. Take your time with the alignment, ask for a hand with the heavier stages, and your new bed will be ready for a comfortable, stylish night from the very first evening.
